The Golden Hills of the Southern parts of the Eastern Free State shares a border with the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. It is a patchwork of rich farms and orchards heavy with fruit. Between Golden Gate in the east and Ladybrand in the west, the countryside rises in a series of picturesquely eroded sandstone hills and grand cliffs dotted with caves in which the early San people took shelter.
